Clixflow: User onboarding
Nearly one in four users abandon an app after using it just once. A good onboarding experience can help a product prove its value and boost user retention rates.
What I did
UX writing, onboarding form mockup (solo exercise)
Challenge
Write an onboarding form for Clixflow, a drag-and-drop website builder. The form needed to collect data on users the user’s role, web design experience, the type of website they want to build, and the website use case to customize their experience.
Strategy
The goal was to onboard users in an engaging way to improve retention and reduce dropoff. Since Clixflow could be used by both developers and non-developers, I needed to consider different use cases and design a form that any user could complete easily. I analyzed competitor onboarding forms, noting features I found helpful and points of friction, and distilled my notes into three key takeaways to guide the copy strategy:
Competitor analysis
Copy strategy
Solution
The result is a conversational form that customizes the user’s experience, demonstrates Clixflow’s value in helping the user achieve their goals, and collects valuable user data for the product and marketing teams.
Takeaways
This was a solo exercise for my UX Writing Certification. If I’d had the opportunity to collaborate with a team, I would have liked to consult UX research in the early stages to learn more about user pain points and collaborate closely with a designer to ensure the visual design, interactions, and copy worked together. I’d also want to evaluate content usability by conducting tests with real users.
